Where did you get your love for fashion?

My parents always joke that my love for fashion was born with me, and I think that's a good way to put it. I don’t remember a time where I wasn’t in love with fashion, though I guess it really started when I used to walk past the high street clothing stores. I used to stand outside those windows and just admire everything because it was so pretty, because I wanted to make things that were that pretty. I remember on my sixteenth birthday, my parents gifted me my first ever outfit that wasn't a hand me down. I was always so thankful to have clothes at all but this outfit became the thing I treasured most. It was just a simple skirt and a shirt to match, but I still have it now because it's so special to me. I guess fashion was my first love, really.

You mentioned your parents just now. Can you tell us a little more about your family?

My family are incredibly close. I actually couldn’t ask for a better family and there's nothing I'd change about them. They’re always so supportive of me and they’ve taught me so many positive values that I’ll never leave behind. We have a close little family: my parents, my grandparents and my two younger siblings. My parents always worked long hours when I was little so I barely saw them, but everything they did were things that they did to provide for us, and I'm so thankful to them for that. They taught me that time with the people you love is really the most valuable thing in the world, even if you don't get much of it.

How and when did you start working for Gucci?

I started working for Gucci during the fall of my first year at college, so I've been with them for two years now altogether. I’d had a few little modelling jobs here and there but I actually only really sent my portfolio to Gucci for fun when I saw the advertisement. I never expected them to notice me but I figured I’d never know if I didn’t try. And then one day they reached out to me saying they liked what they saw and it all began there, I guess. They’ve been like a family to me and I’ve learned so much from them and had so many opportunities arise thanks for them. I truly love them with all my heart and more and I don't know how I got as lucky as I did, but there isn't a day that passes where I'm not incredibly grateful.


Do you ever worry you’ll be judged for your fashion taste?

I used to; it used to be my biggest fear. I’d always get bullied at school for loving the things that I did and for many years, that threw me off. I was sixteen the first time I wore a skirt to school and everyone stared, called me names, looked down on me more than they already did. So I guess for many years, it scared me to death. But these days I don’t really mind what other people think. To me, all that matters is that I’m happy and comfortable, which I am when I dress the way I like to!

Why do you wear skirts?

I wear skirts because they make me feel comfortable. Society teaches us that boys shouldn’t be allowed to wear skirts because it’s ‘too feminine’ but I guess I’ve just never seen a problem with that? Personally, I love feeling pretty and that’s just my individual preference. I wear skirts the same way girls wear trousers: to make myself happy, not for anyone else. I know that for some people, skirts aren't a preference. But I believe that if everyone had the same taste in fashion, there'd be no way for the industry to evolve.

If you could collaborate with any brand outside of Gucci, who would it be?

Oh, there are a few! I don’t think I can pick just one but I’d love to work with Burberry, Chanel or IGNIS one day. I really admire all of them and it would be an honour to collaborate with them if I ever get the chance to!

Tell us about college?

I love college. Right now I’m in my third year majoring in fashion design. I feel lucky every day to be at college because growing up, it never seemed like a possibility. I remember that as soon as I was legally old enough, I went and found a part time job to go to after school so that I could save for college. I only managed to save about enough to get me through my first year, so if it wasn’t for Gucci I guess I really wouldn’t have made it as far as I have. I truly owe them a lot.

What are your dreams for the future?

I would love to continue working with Gucci in the future but I’d also love to establish myself as a fashion designer someday since that's always been my lifelong aspiration. My biggest dream is to design my own line and to make a name for myself as a designer in this industry to shape it in my own way, like many great designers do all the time. I’ll keep working hard until I get there!
